Following Ford’s Footsteps, General Motors Announced To Share Tesla Charging Stations In The Future

General Motors (GM) recently announced that all of its new electric vehicles from 2025 will be manufactured with NACS charging ports, which can be charged at Tesla’s super charging stations all over the place.

Ford has previously made a similar decision to adopt Tesla’s charging standard. The addition of Tesla this time means that the three major electric vehicle manufacturers in North America have now unified the charging hardware specifications.

General Motors announced a partnership with Tesla. Starting in 2024, GM will provide adapters to allow the NACS cable to be connected to the CCS1 charging port of existing electric vehicles; from 2025, all new electric vehicles will manufacture NACS charging ports and change to Customers provide CCS adapters so that they can continue to use the CCS charging network.

At present, in the States, Mexico, Canada and other places, the design of electric vehicle charging head is mainly divided into Tesla’s own North American Charging Standard (NACS), and other electric vehicle manufacturers’ combined charging system (CCS).

The former thousands of super charging stations only provide services for Tesla cars, the latter includes North American standards and European standards, and other car manufacturers use this charging system for electric vehicles.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, Tesla superchargers account for about 60 percent of the total fast charging stations in the U.S. and Canada.

Tesla, GM and Ford combined account for 70{9fa2ae831048424756faedea87f44870cd2ea6d09bcfab62eb5dabc6b233e172} of the current US electric vehicle market. Some electric vehicle industry executives believe that the difference in charging connectors is one of the obstacles that prevent more consumers from choosing electric vehicles.
